Hemorrhoid Articles

According to the experts, somewhere between 40 and 75 percent of adults will one day suffer from hemorrhoids, also known as 'piles'. Maybe you've already experienced this uncomfortable condition and know what a pain it can be. This article will talk about the benefits of using a natural hemorrhoid treatment to deal with this problem.

Piles affect the veins in and around the rectum and anus, causing them to inflame, just as varicose veins are inflamed blood vessels in the extremities. The difference is in their location. No one is sure what causes this disorder, but it's quite common in people who are required to spend much of their day sitting down, like truck drivers for example. Or office workers. Pregnant women are also common sufferers.

Hemorrhoids are classified as either internal or external. The former will be found inside the anus and often cause bleeding to occur during bowel evacuation. Sometimes there is pain but not always. There is normally pronounced itching and irritation, however. They will sometimes prolapse and be visible coming out of the anus.

The latter type, external, is as the name implies. They will be seen outside the anus, usually in the form of a bulge. They can be intensely painful, especially when accompanied by a blood clot, called a thrombosis. Neither type should be ignored. They may last anywhere up to a week or so but, if not treated, can get worse and last much longer.

It's best to deal with hemorrhoids at their first appearance. The earlier the better, and the easier the treatment will be. The first thing you should do is take a Spitz bath. This means adding Epsom salts to warm bath water, 1/2 cup per gallon dilution, and sitting in it for 20 minutes. Make sure when you're finished that you dry off completely, especially the affected areas.

After the Spitz bath, you need to take some Witch Hazel, in the form of either liquid, ointment or pads, and apply to the problem area. Witch Hazel can be found in most drug stores. It will act as an astringent in shrinking the inflamed areas and help decrease bleeding. It should also relieve some of the itching and pain.

Be advised that the above steps deal with relief of symptoms only. You should also consider dealing with the conditions that caused the problem in the first place. First on the list is inadequate diet. Eating too many processed foods and not enough fiber is believed to be a main contributing factor in contracting piles. This type of diet causes stools to be hard to pass and puts undue stress on the veins in the rectum. Exercise is also important because it improves digestion and aids in proper bowel evacuation. And don't forget to drink plenty of water during the day.

If your job requires you to sit for long periods, take frequent breaks and walk around to get the blood circulating. Of course, even following all the steps discussed, you may still end up with piles at some time. In that case, it's best to consider using a natural hemorrhoid treatment.

Fortunately, hemorrhoids can usually be controlled by practicing a healthy lifestyle and simple medical treatments. Hemorrhoids have a tendency to recur once the rectal veins have become enlarged. Much less straining is required to have a recurrence of hemorrhoids than it took to develop them initially. Finding the cause of your hemorrhoids is the first step. Treatment of hemorrhoids is pointless if you don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t eliminate the cause of the problem. Straining due to constipation is the source of most hemorrhoids. Keeping stools soft is the best way to avoid straining during a bowel movement. Regular exercise and healthy eating habits are the best preventative measure you can take but if all else fails, you must seek treatment right away. Hemorrhoids that cause mild discomfort in the morning could become excruciatingly painful by evening.
